The aim of the project is to produce bags made from biopolymers (polyhydroxyalkanoates, PHA) to be used for the collection of the organic fraction of municipal solid waste (OFMSW), with properties suitable for full biodegradability in current waste treatment facilities.
The specific expertise and results achieved in automation and control systems through the CellarMate Plus line, along with numerous studies on yeast propagation and the control and management of the optimal growth environment for budding reproduction—with or without respiration (fermentation)—form the biotechnological foundation for developing a pilot-scale plant. This plant will be designed to manage a special microbial process capable of converting OFMSW (Organic Fraction of Municipal Solid Waste) into volatile fatty acids (VFAs), which can then be used to extract a filmable PHA suitable for producing fully biodegradable bags.
